SEEON – BAVARIA – GERMANY

Seeon belongs to the rural commune “Seeon – Seebruck” which consists of the three villages: Seebruck, Seeon and Truchtlaching.

Seeon has about 1750 inhabitants, the rural commune has 4482 inhabitants.
Seeon belongs to the district of Traunstein and thus to the pictorial Bavarian landscape of “Chiemgau”. It is approximately 70 kilometres southeast to the Bavarian Capital Munich next to the largest Bavarian lake “Chiemsee”, called the Bavarian Sea.
Bavaria lies in the very south of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Seeon (537 m) is surrounded by 7 lakes, which are called “Seeoner Seenplatte” –the remnants of glacial waters in the north of the lake Chiemsee. Seeon was an ancient settlement of the Celts and Romans. Seeon was documented for the first time in 924 a.c. when the Benedict monastery was founded. Later on, even Mozart, the famous composer, stayed here to work. Seeon could celebrate its 1000th anniversary in 1994. Today, the place beams with numerous cultural events like concerts, exhibitions and lectures.

Seebruck originates from the Roman “Bedaium” around 50 b.c. and served as foothold for the Roman on their long distance route from Salzburg to Augsburg. Numerous archaeological findings from Seebruck and its surroundings are now exhibited in the Roman museum “Bedaium”.

Huge funeral mounds give evidence of the early settlements in Truchtlaching, the Celts cultivated the area as early as 500 B.C.. There is a little Celtic museum next to Truchtlaching, called Stöffling, where you can see Celtic houses and how they lived.
